Karavanke were named after the characteristic east-west direction of the ridges and valleys that follow each other like a caravan.
In the Karavanke we encounter steep slopes, scenic peaks, mountains, valleys, gorges, waterfalls, diverse plant and animal species, rich nature and preserved cultural heritage. The unspoiled nature and specialty of plant and animal species make them an integral part of the Natura 2000 area.
Mountains and hills with well-kept hiking and mountaineering trails, suitable for easier hikes or more demanding ascents, offer a variety of opportunities for active leisure for various target groups. Karavanke are an ideal choice, both for short escapes into nature, as well as for a few days of walking and rest.
You can climb to the beautiful Karavanke peak Kepa (2143m) from several directions right from the Upper Sava Valley.
