Our ride kicks off from Kranjska Gora, following the cycling path in the direction of Mojstrana. Just above Mojstrana, on the opposite, left bank of the Sava Dolinka River, we spot Dovje – a charming, sun-drenched village that’s well worth the detour off the main trail. We continue past the Aljažev hram café, where the trail climbs steeply, and at the first crossroads we turn right toward the centre of the village. From there, we keep heading east, riding past Hiša Pr’ Katr and following the mountain signs for Mount Dovška Baba. The road climbs gradually to the first crossroads, where we turn right toward Mount Dovška Baba. After a few kilometres of gentle ascent, we take a left at the next junction, staying on track for Dovška Baba.
Views are scarce as we pedal through the forest, but the steady climb keeps us focused and in the zone. Our efforts are rewarded when we roll onto the Dovška Rožca alpine pasture, with a mountain lodge. We have to mention the final 100 metres – a short but rather challenging push that some of us might choose to hike-a-bike if the legs are feeling it.
At the lodge, we refuel and soak in the stunning panorama: the mighty Mežakla, the Karawanke, and the Julian Alps across the valley. For those with energy to spare, a short hike up to Dovška Baba (just 200 vertical metres above) reveals epic views north into neighbouring Austria. The descent retraces the route of our ascent. The steep, gravely, and sometimes slippery sections, keep us on our toes.
ATTENTION: During the grazing season, access to the Dovška Rožca hut by bicycle is forbidden.
