Above Gozd Martuljek, perched on the forested slopes of the Karawanke Mountains about 200 metres above the Sava Dolinka River Valley, we roll onto a grassy plateau dotted with the scattered homesteads of Srednji Vrh. This ledge, carved by ancient glaciers, serves up some of the most breathtaking views of the Martuljek or Špik mountain group. We kick things off in Kranjska Gora, jumping onto the bike route toward Gozd Martuljek. Once there, we turn left and start grinding up a narrow ribbon of asphalt towards Srednji Vrh. The hairpin bends are challenging, tackling what feels like a near-vertical wall, and from deep below we catch the sound of the Jerman stream’s waterfalls tumbling down from Železnica, past Srednji Vrh, and into the Sava Dolinka. After conquering the steep climb, we’re rewarded with panoramic views of the Martuljek peaks, soaring skyward at the far end of the valley. To really enjoy in the mountain backdrop, we always pick a clear, sunny day for this ride. If we’re still hungry for more elevation and fresh mountain air, we can push on to the remote Jurež farmstead, tucked away at the end of a cart track. When we’re ready to wrap it up, we simply retrace our tracks back down to the valley.
