Cycling trail to Tromeja

A cycling trip from Kranjska Gora through picturesque Rateče to Tromeja, where views of three lands intertwine.

We begin our journey in Kranjska Gora, following the route of the former railway that once connected Tarvisio and Jesenice, and has now been beautifully transformed into a scenic walking and cycling path. We ride along this until we reach the road leading toward Planica and Tamar. Most walkers and cyclists turn left to visit the famous ski jumps and Nordic Centre. But we take the road less travelled, turning right, crossing the main road, and rolling into the village of Rateče, renowned for its record-low winter temperatures due to its unique location. We follow the main road through the village toward the border crossing, and at the end of the village, by the Šurc Inn, we turn right onto a forest road. At first, the trail winds between meadows, offering open views, before it slips into the forest, where we’ll be without such vistas until we reach the top. A pleasant climb awaits – not too steep, not too demanding – rewarding us with a sense of accomplishment at the summit. The road itself is smooth and enjoyable to ride. At the crossroads, we make sure to head left uphill, otherwise we simply follow the signposts. The most important thing is to enjoy the ride, and reaching the summit will only add to our delight with breathtaking views across three countries. For the return we can retrace our route or, at the crossroads mentioned earlier, we can turn left and descend gently to the main road from the Korensko sedlo border crossing, which will take us back to Kranjska Gora.
