As we roll out from Dovje toward Jesenice, the valley really opens up. The mighty Mežakla throws some serious shade on one side, while the sunny slopes of the Karawanke Mountains beckon on the other via the forest road linking Dovje and Jesenice.
We ride the cycling route to Mojstrana and Dovje, then turn left across the main road into Dovje. We continue past the Aljažev hram café, where the trail climbs steeply, and at the first crossroads we turn right toward the centre of the village. From there, we keep heading east, riding past Hiša Pr’ Katr and following the mountain signs for Mount Dovška Baba. After the village of Dovje, we climb gently on a nice forest road. This section is the same as in tour to the Dovška Rožca alpine pasture, described below, except that at the crossroads we turn right toward Plavški Rovt. A little more climbing awaits us to the Čez Visoke saddle, after which we start our gradual descent toward Jesenice. The forest, which covers much of our route, is occasionally broken by sunny clearings offering views in all directions. We keep spinning until the landscape opens into the wide valley under Mount Golica, where the idyllic Plavški Rovt lies, followed by a steep descent into Jesenice.
If we started our ride in Kranjska Gora, there’s still a good stretch to get home. The best return route is along the path by the right bank of the Sava Dolinka River: we cross the bridge, ride through the underpass beneath the highway to the forested slope, and then turn right and follow a track parallel to the highway all the way back to Kranjska Gora.
