In recent years, the rapid growth of tourism in Slovenia, especially in the leading destinations of the Julian Alps, has led to a sharp increase in the number of visitors to the Triglav National Park (TNP), which has increased the pressure on the natural environment – both from traffic and visitors, as well as from various recreational activities in the countryside.
One of the most congested Alpine valleys within TNP is the Vrata Valley, especially the national road leading into it. On the basis of a traffic study and the project “Traffic calming in the Vrata valley”, measures to reduce traffic in this area have been identified in an integrated manner. These measures include:
– introduction of a new traffic regime,
– the establishment of a network of P+R car parks in the wider area of Mojstrana,
– the development of car parks within the valley; and
– the establishment of free public transport from 14 June to 15 September.
Visitors are advised that parking outside the designated parking spaces is prohibited – this applies to parking in the countryside, on the roadside or in other unmarked areas. Parking is only allowed in marked parking areas. The same prohibition also applies to the wider area near the Peričnik waterfall.
