The Three-border (Tromeja) Tourist Trail is one of the most beautiful and picturesque trails in the Kranjska Gora area. It is a marked 7-kilometer-long trail that takes you to the top of Tromeja. Tromeja represents the meeting point of three nations and countries—Austria, Italy, and Slovenia.
You can start the Tromeja tourist trail in the center of Rateče at the ethnographic landmark, Kajžnk House. From there, continue towards the Šurc inn and along the forest path towards the top of Tromeja. At the beginning, you will walk along a wide cart track, which later narrows into a classic forest path. The trail is moderately steep, but there are no dangerous sections. Tromeja is a suitable destination for hikers of all ages.
Along the mostly forest trail, there are wooden information boards that will encourage you to discover new, undiscovered corners. The information boards will teach you about the origins of the village of Rateče, the pastures, hayfields, and forests in the Karawanke, the Rapal border, and Tromeja, the meeting point of three nations and cultures.
When you reach the top of the Tromeja, you will be rewarded with a view of the Zilje and Julian Alps and the Karawanke Mountains in good weather. The border stone, placed on the lawn between the three countries, is a popular spot for taking photos. You can walk the 7-kilometer trail on your own or with a guided group.
Every year at the beginning of September, a meeting is held at Tromeja, where the nations of three cultures gather.
