From Rateče to Tromeja

The border mountain Peč is a highlight of the route, where there is a three-way border between Slovenia, Austria and Italy. The trail starts in Rateče and follows a mountain path through the forest to the Peč lookout.

We set off from the bus station in Rateče. The path leads us past the Church of the Holy Spirit to the centre of the village. At the Gostilna Žerjav inn, we turn right and continue through the village (heading northwest). After about 500 metres, we turn right onto a narrow path and follow it to an unpaved cart track. Along the way, we can view the information boards that are part of the Tromeja – or Tripoint – Tourist Route. After another 500 metres, we turn right and follow the signposts to the former Planinski dom Tromeja (Tromeja Mountain Lodge). Here we have two options: we can take the narrow and steep, but shorter, route up to the summit of Tromeja – Peč, which marks the meeting point of Slovenia, Italy, and Austria, or we can continue along the cart track. We make our return journey by retracing our steps back to the trailhead.
