From Kranjska Gora to Vršič Pass

The trail, with its many natural and cultural sights, leads you to the highest Slovenian road pass.

The hike begins in front of the Kranjska Gora Tourist Information Centre. At the Hotel Kotnik, we turn right and continue to the Ljudski dom Kranjska Gora, then left and toward Korona, Resort & Entertainment. At the end of the street, we turn right and pass Hotel Kranjska Gora along the road that leads to Lake Jasna. After the bridge before Lake Jasna, we follow the path between the lake and the river onto a cart track that joins the road to Vršič. From the parking lot at the end of Lake Jasna, we continue on the main road for about 100 metres. Just before the bridge, we turn left and follow the cart track along the Pišnica River toward the mountain lodge in Krnica. At the memorial park dedicated to those lost in the mountains in Mali Tamar, we follow the path across the meadow, cross a stream, and climb through the forest toward Vršiška cesta road. Shortcuts lead us along the old Ruska cesta road beneath Mihov dom and past the Russian Chapel. We then cross the main road, rejoining it only at the 17th bend. Taking the road to the left, we descend to Tonkina koča lodge, where we return to the old Ruska cesta road and climb past Erjavčeva koča lodge up to Poštarski dom. Following the cart track, we descend to the Tičarjev dom lodge and finally reach the highest road pass in the Eastern Julian Alps – Vršič. The road to Vršič offers an abundance of natural landmarks and cultural heritage. Among other sights, we can admire the “Heathen Maiden” (Ajdovska deklica) – a natural rock formation on the Prisank wall that looks like a woman’s face, the Prisank Window (Prisankovo okno) – an impressive 80-metre opening in the rock, the Russian Chapel, and the cemeteries of the Russian prisoners who built the road to Vršič.
