Riding on the beautiful, paved cycling trail, we head west from Kranjska Gora to the road where we turn left into the valley below Mount Ponca. Before long, we catch sight of the internationally famous ski jumps, including the world’s biggest ski-flying hill, one that enables jumps of up to 250 metres. The construction of these ski jumps was possible thanks to the characteristic shape of this glacial valley, which leads us past the ski flying hills to the start of a slightly more serious ascent. The road, which is gravel in some sections, takes us through the forest to a green meadow at the foot of the rock walls and to the very edge of the Triglav National Park. Planica is one of the most beautiful valleys in Slovenia, and the Tamar Mountain Lodge at the end of our route offers a pleasant place to rest, refresh and enjoy the view. From here, the only way onwards is on foot, so the mighty rock walls of Jalovec require us to return along the same path. On the descent, we must watch out for the sandy and, in places, gravelly surface that might cause a fall.
