The Green Scheme od Slovenian tourism is a national program and certification scheme that, under the umbrella brand SLOVENIA GREEN:

  • brings together all efforts for sustainable tourism development in Slovenia,
  • offers destinations and providers concrete tools for assessing and improving sustainable operations
  • and promotes these green operations through the Slovenia Green brand.

The key strategic objective of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism is to introduce sustainable models into Slovenian tourism, both at the level of tourism providers and destinations. All strategic objectives are accompanied by sustainable development and care for the economic, socio-cultural, and natural environment.

Destinations are assessed according to the global criteria of the Green Destination standard, which comprises 84 criteria divided into six categories, with the final assessment given on a scale of 1 to 10. In spring 2023, updated standards came into force, imposing even more requirements on destinations in terms of quantifying their goals. This means a requirement for more detailed monitoring of the achievement of goals in the areas of waste, energy use, emissions, and the promotion of the introduction of criteria in the private tourism sector. The destination of Kranjska Gora joined the scheme in 2016. After much effort and thorough implementation of activities, the municipality of Kranjska Gora was awarded the Gold Label in autumn 2019. Destinations that are part of the scheme must undergo a reassessment of their sustainable performance every three years.

Kranjska Gora achieved an overall average rating of 8.2 in the 2022 reassessment, which is sufficient to maintain its excellent bronze destination status. Once again, it achieved the highest rating in the Culture and Tradition category (10). The destination demonstrates good care for its cultural heritage and strengthens its importance with numerous activities. The destination has also made encouraging progress in the Nature and Landscape category, where it achieved a score of 9.4. In the Environment and Climate category, the destination achieved a score of 7.8. The carbon footprint of visitors to the destination was calculated, which is a good basis for strategically addressing this issue in the future. In the area of Destination Management, the destination achieved a score of 7.9. In the future, the destination should pay more attention to identifying the positive and negative impacts that tourism has on the natural and cultural environment of the destination. The destination achieved a slightly lower score (7.7) in the Social Climate category. The destination does a very good job of directing visitors throughout the year. The destination received its lowest rating in the category of Tourism Business Operations (6.3), which is an incentive to further connect the tourism industry and successfully steer it towards greener business practices. We have already taken a step in this direction, as three providers have successfully applied for the call for proposals, which is part of the “First Mile” project aimed at improving the sustainable footprint of tourism accommodation providers.

We encourage visitors to fill their reusable bottles with water at drinking fountains, thereby reducing the amount of plastic waste. Drinking fountains are located at several locations throughout the destination.
