“The heroes of Planica fly like birds…” … is certainly the most well-known tune in Rateče. The icon of ethnic popular music Slavko Avsenik dedicated the song “Planica” to ski jumpers on one of the largest ski jumps in the world, the Planica ski jump. Rateče are known for its long and cold winters, but also for the abundance of sunny days, when you can take a walk on the alpine meadows at the foot of the Karavanke mountains. The winters are cold and long, which is why the writer Josip Lavtižar named the place »Carniolan Siberia«.
