World Earth Day 2024

The slogan of this year’s Earth Day is “Planet versus plastics”. It calls for a transition towards ending the use of plastic in order to preserve the health of people and the planet. Among the demands is a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040, with the ultimate goal of building a plastic-free future for future generations.

In Slovenia, most of the plastic waste is recycled

In Slovenia, 63,000 tonnes of plastic waste were generated in 2022, while 72,000 tonnes were recycled. The larger amount of recycled than generated plastic waste in 2021 and 2022 is mostly due to a part of plastic waste generated in 2020 entering the recycling process in those years and partly due to increased import of plastic waste.

More plastic waste is imported than exported

In 2022, around 107,000 tonnes of plastic waste were imported to Slovenia, while 92,000 tonnes were exported. More than half (60,000 tonnes) of plastic waste was imported from Italy, while the largest share (25,000 tonnes or around one quarter) was exported to Turkey.

Less GHG emissions per capita than in the EU-27

In Slovenia, 12.4 million tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in CO2 equivalent were generated in 2022, which amounts to 5.9 tonnes per capita. In the EU-27 on average 6.5 tonnes of GHG in CO2 equivalent per capita were generated, the most in Denmark and Luxembourg (12.4 and 12.1 tonnes, respectively) and the least in Malta and Germany (3.7 and 4.0 tonnes, respectively).

Current expenditure for environmental protection is increasing

In 2022, gross fixed capital formation for environmental protection amounted to EUR 409 million or 0.81% of GDP, which is EUR 58 million or 0.14 of a percentage point more than a year before. Current expenditure for environmental protection in the five-year period 2018–2022 increased from EUR 595 million to EUR 831 million or from 1.30% of GDP to 1.65% of GDP.

The highest share of environmental taxes were energy taxes

In 2022, slightly more than EUR 1.6 billion of environmental taxes were collected in Slovenia, which is similar to a year before. The highest share of environmental taxes was represented by energy taxes (84.1% or a little less than EUR 1.4 billion). 12.5% or EUR 204 million were transport taxes, while the least environmental taxes were collected with pollution and resource taxes; slightly more than 3% or EUR 55 million.
