Traffic regime during the Nordic World Ski Championships Planica 2023

CLOSURE OF PLANICA VALLEY

Planica will be closed to private vehicles from Monday, 13 February. During the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships from 20 February to 5 March, the cross-country skiing trails in Planica will be closed and cross-country skiing will be available in Rateče from Lediny to Ponce (border with Italy).

The road Rateče – Planica will be closed to traffic from the roundabout in Rateče from 13 February. Pedestrian access to Planica and to the home in Tamar will be maintained until 18 February. From 18.2. onwards, the same closure regime will apply to pedestrians, or access to the area will be possible only with accreditation, and after 22.2. also with tickets.

VISIT TO TAMAR

Until 5.3. inclusive, access to the Tamar is not possible as the route passes through the event area, which cannot be entered without a ticket or accreditation.

FREE CIRCLE ROUTE

Visitors with a ticket or accreditation who are staying in Kranjska Gora and the surrounding area during the World Championships will be offered a free shuttle bus service to the entry point to the venue from 22 to 26 February and from 28 February to 5 March. Buses will run frequently, with no timetable. Buses run from 30 minutes before the opening of the venue in Planica and up to 30 minutes after the closing of the venue in Planica, from approximately 9.00 to 21.00.

Parking outside the marked parking areas, especially on the roadside and in grassy areas, will be strictly penalised by the police.

The entry points for the shuttle bus service, which starts a few hours before the competition, are located in Kranjska Gora, Podkoren and Rateče.

The shuttle buses for accredited visitors also start a few hours before the competition and the entry point is located in the car park of the Kompas Hotel in Kranjska Gora.

All visitors are kindly asked to board the buses with patience on their return from Planica.

FREE BUS ON THE ROUTE MOJSTRANA – KRANJSKA GORA

During the World Championships in Planica from 21 February to 5 March 2023, a free shuttle bus will also run between Mojstrana and Kranjska Gora. The bus will be available to anyone who needs transport.

BY TRAIN TO PLANICA – FREE OF CHARGE

All visitors to the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Planica 2023 between February 22 and February 26 and between February 28 and March 5 have the opportunity to use a free combined return transport by train and bus from any railway station in Slovenia to Planica and back.

Upon presentation of a valid World Championships ticket, passengers will receive a free train ticket and a bus voucher at Slovenian Railways sales points, where possible, or on the train, which must be kept until returning home.

This transport can also be used by the accreditation holders!

ADDITIONAL TRAINS
For the return trip from Jesenice to Ljubljana or Nova Gorica, in addition to regular trains for the indicated days, additional trains will be also available.

The possibility of using free return transportation by train from anywhere in Slovenia to Jesenice applies to all departures and arrivals of regular and additional trains of the Slovenian Railways.

From the Jesenice train/bus station to Ledine (Rateče) and back, a free bus transportation by the organizer will be available to the passengers at the most optimal times of the day to view the competitive program of this exceptional sporting event (see the timetable).

IMPORTANT! Bus departures from Jesenice and Ledine are not linked to the arrivals/departures of all Slovenian Railways trains, but only to the optimal arrivals/departures of regular and additional trains, which make the most sense for visiting the daily competition program in Planica.

ENTRY TO THE VENUE

To avoid crowds at the entrances and to allow visitors to get into the venue as quickly as possible, we will check tickets at the external entrances. This will be followed by entry into the event area. Visitors with luggage will be directed to special entrances for luggage check.

PARKING

Free parking for visitors will be provided along the main road Kranjska Gora – Rateče and in the town of Kranjska Gora. All visitors are kindly requested to follow the signposting and the instructions of the traffic wardens.

CAMPERS

It will not be possible to park camper vans in Kranjska Gora and the surrounding area during the World Championships. Visitors with camper vans are kindly requested to stay at Camping Špik in Martuljko Forest, from where a free shuttle bus will be provided to the ent

BY ROAD

Planica is easily accessible by bus or car. It is located in north-western Slovenia, extending south of the village of Rateče, not far from another well-known travel destination, Kranjska Gora. 

IMPORTANT: RT-901 road from Rateče roundabout to Planica will be closed for traffic. Only vehicles with a permit issued by the organizer will be allowed access.

  • From Ljubljana – 1 h 10 minMotorway A2 runs from Ljubljana to the town of Jesenice and from there a first-class main road extends to Rateče.
  • From Bled – 40 min A main road from Bled connects to A2 motorway in Lesce.

  • From Villach – 35 minIt is advised that visitors use the Korensko sedlo (Wurzen Pass) mountain pass to reach Planica from Villach. Alternatively, access is possible through Italy via Tarvisio or through Karavanke tunnel through Jesenice.
  • From Tarvisio – 20 minVisitors can access Planica by the SS 54 road that connects Tarvisio and Rateče.

    PARKING
    Free parking for visitors will be provided along the main road Kranjska Gora – Rateče and in the town of Kranjska Gora. We ask all visitors to follow the information signs and instructions of the traffic marshals.
