Radovna Valley

The Radovna Valley lies entirely in the area of the Triglav National Park (TNP).

Beauty by the mountain stream

Zgornja Radovna lies in the area of the Triglav National Park by the Radovna stream, into which waters from the Krma and Kot glacial valleys flow. The valley is caught between the slopes of the Pokljuka and Mežakla plateaus, and is covered by hilly meadows full of flowers in spring and summer. The homesteads are scattered across the valley, so that the walk around Radovna is a unique experience.

Visit Gogal’s homestead, where more than a four-hundred-year-old linden tree stands. Continue to Pocar’s homestead, which has been transformed into an ethnographic museum with frescoes and authentic interiors. At the Psnak homestead, see the well-preserved Psnak apiary, and lower down is the Psnak sawmill and mill.

If you still have enough energy after this walk, you can go on a wonderful trip to Julian Alps, you will not be closer to them anywhere else.

The old linden tree tells stories from antiquity…

Hummocky meadows

Hummocky meadows like waves in the sea Hummocky meadows are a geomorphic phenomenon from the glacial period, which you cannot miss if you visit the Valleys of RadovnaKotKrmaVrata, as well as the area of Bohinj, Pokljuka and the Soča Valley Region. In Radovna, there are only a few hummocky meadows left, as they are being levelled due to them being easier to cultivate with machines. Hummocky meadows only remain where mowing is done by hand only, as is the case at the Pocar Homestead.

A Gogal linden tree

Coexistence of linden, spruce and people

The linden tree in Slovenia has a special significance from the past, when the village fathers gathered and waded under the linden tree in the core of the village, and the linden trees also stood next to churches and signs.

One of the most powerful linden trees, in fact a linden tree, stands in front of Gogal’s homestead no. 10 in Zgornja Radovna. It is 25 m high and its “chest” circumference is a magnificent 642 cm! Regardless of the estimated age of 500 years (!), The linden tree canopy is lush and without dry branches. The tree hosts 1 larger spruce and four smaller spruces so that it is not bored…

Check out the linden tree in the spring when it is fully leafy, blooming and fragrant. The beautiful tree is inscribed in the Slovenian tree natural heritage.

The Psnak sawmill and watermill

In the struggle for existence it is necessary to be sly!

The Psnak sawmill and watermill are located 300 metres from the source of the Radovna River in the village of Zgornja Radovna under the Gogala farm.

The water mill and saw mill only operated occasionally – at high water after rain. And even then, their use was extremely carefully aligned, since the same water powered both the water wheel and the Venetian saw mill.

See the “black” stone for grinding rye, oats, barley and buckwheat – these were the only cereals which grew on the humble fields…
