The Peričnik Waterfall is one of the most famous waterfalls in the heart of the Triglav National Park, flowing into the glacially formed Vrata Valley. The picturesque and magnificent Peričnik Waterfall is a popular excursion point in the alpine Vrata Valley. It is one of the most recognisable symbols and is protected as a natural heritage site. In the past, there were plans to harness the power of its waters to generate electricity, but these ideas were abandoned due to nature protection regimes.
An interesting feature of the Peričnik waterfall is its changing path – it changed direction several times while “cutting” the rock face. This can be seen today in the form of grooves that the water has formed in the conglomerate wall. In the past, the channel above the lower Peričnik was blocked, so the water temporarily flowed as a two-stranded waterfall. Peričnik is in some ways a special kind of world heritage site: very few waterfalls can be walked under, so you walk behind the waterfall. If you want to cross behind or under the waterfall to the other side, be very careful as the path is wet and slippery.
When talking about the Peričnik waterfall, we have in mind two waterfalls: the upper waterfall, which is 16 m high, and the lower waterfall, which is 52 m high. The lower Peričnik waterfall is considered one of the highest waterfalls in Slovenia. This magnificent waterfall will impress you with its rainy water and misty jets.
We recommend visiting the Peričnik waterfall in spring, when it is at its most enchanting, as the melting of the winter snow makes the water even more watery and increases the power of the cascade.
Peričnik Waterfall is located in the Vrata Valley. A marked trail leads to the Peričnik waterfall from the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana. We recommend that you walk or cycle to it. During the summer season, there is a free bus to the Vrata Valley, which will take you all the way to the Peričnik Hut. There is a sign with all the information about the Peričnik waterfall nearby. From there, it is just a ten-minute walk to the lower Peričnik waterfall.
