The Karavanke Mountains are named after the characteristic east-west direction of the backs and valleys, which follow each other like a caravan. At 120 km, the Karavanke is considered the longest mountain chain, stretching from Tromeja between Austria, Italy and Slovenia to Croatia. The Karavanke is one of the three Slovenian mountain ranges where mighty peaks rise above 2000 metres. The highest of these is Stol, which, at 2236 metres, offers a magnificent view of both the Slovenian and Austrian sides. The Karavanke mountain range forms a natural dividing line between Slovenia and Austria. The three important mountain passes Ljubelj, Korensko sedlo and Jezerski Vrh lead through them.
The Karavanke Mountains are home to steep slopes, panoramic peaks, mountains, valleys, gorges, waterfalls, diverse flora and fauna, rich nature and preserved cultural heritage. The unspoilt nature and the special features of the flora and fauna make them an integral part of the Natura 2000 area. On the slopes of the Karavanke Mountains, and more specifically in the meadows above Planina pod Golico, there are daffodil plantations, which constitute a natural value. The daffodils, or key lilies as the locals call them, bloom in May.
It is precisely because of the varied terrain that the Karavanke Mountains are home to a variety of animal species. In the higher altitudes, you will find mountain species such as the chamois, ibex, golden eagle, etc. In the summer months, you may find a herd of cows or sheep in the pastures along the trail. It is important not to disturb them and to respect their environment.
