Even if you don’t plan to conquer any of the peaks that stand guard over this Alpine valley, the Vrata Valley itself is worth a visit. Take three hours and follow the well-marked Triglavska Bistrica Trail to the head of the valley below the Triglav northern wall. The trail is family-friendly, moderately difficult, but not suitable for strollers.
The Triglavska Bistrica Trail begins in the mountaineering village of Mojstrana, located at the entrance to Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park. The starting point of the Triglavska Bistrica Trail is in front of the Slovenian Alpine Museum, where the trail officially begins with the first information point. From here, follow the distinctive information boards of the Triglav National Park.
A ten-kilometer trail through the longest glacially transformed valley will take you all the way to the head of the valley, beneath the mighty Triglav northern face. Along the way, you will see neat information boards where you can learn about the local geology, water world, forests, and more. On the way, you will walk under the galleries formed by the Triglavska Bistrica stream. In the Vrata Valley, you will also find characteristic “rovte” or pastures where farmers graze their cattle during the summer season.
One of the natural attractions along the way is the Peričnik waterfall, which consists of an upper and lower waterfall. The lower waterfall is known for its water entrance and impressive conglomerate wall, where you can step behind the water curtain.
The trail continues along crystal clear water and leads you first to the Aljažev dom v Vratih mountain hut and then to the final destination at the foot of the Triglav northern face at the head of the Vrata valley. The water of the Triglavska Bistrica is cold and refreshing. Sit down on one of the white stones beside it, take off your shoes, and soak your tired feet, while your eyes wander over the most beautiful walls of the Julian Alps.
